Hiring a car in South Africa requires that you present your national driving licence which must be printed in English. Travel with this documentation at all times when driving your hire vehicle. The Police will expect to see documentation if they stop you.
Seat belts are required to be worn. South Africans drive on the left-hand side of the road. Main roads are identified by number, not name. National highways take the prefix 'N' followed by a number. If the route marker or road sign has white lettering on a blue background, the road is a freeway with multi lane carriageways and exit/entry roads. Slower traffic is expected to allow faster traffic to pass, so if you are sightseeing in your hired BMW or Minibus, let the other traffic by.

24-hour service stations can be found along all the major South African highways, but are less frequent in the more remote areas. Petrol is pumped by an attendant who will probably also check the oil, water and clean the windows. A tip is expected for this service. International credit cards are not normally accepted so check first or pay by cash.
