Jacksonville is on the northeast tip of Florida, basking in sun and surrounded by water. At nearly 759 sq. miles, Jacksonville is the largest city in the continental U.S. which makes getting around the city a bit of a challenge. The region is known as the "First Coast" because this is where America was discovered, and still remains the longest continually settled area of the USA. Out door life is the order of the day, with fishing, boating, sailing and swimming, golf, tennis etc.etc. Jacksonville is very different to the rest of Florida, being less brash and 'theme park' orientated. A quiet and undiscovered ambience prevades the place. Jacksonville hosts more superior resort properties like the Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island Plantation, Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and the Marriott at Sawgrass, but the real attractions lie outside of the resort and hotel boundaries. Fernandina Beach or St. Augustine is well worth a visit. St. Augustine is full of American history, being a very very old settlement. A day in the ancient city can lead you in and out of the nation's oldest house, schoolhouse and drug store. Visit the coquina walls of Castillo de San Marcos, and afterwards go to Fort Matanzas State Park, where costumed rangers and a boat ride will entertain you. North of Jacksonville is Fernandina Beach and nearby Amelia Island. Amelia Island is very upmarket and condos reign supreme. These are just a few of the delights of Jacksonville.
You will definately need a hire car in Jacksonville. Most people stay in the Beaches, Baymeadows/Southpoint or the Southbank. The Beaches is a convenient place to stay, with some form of dining, entertainment and shopping, not to mention the beach, within walking distance of every hotel. Bike riding is a great way to get around locally, although don't forget the heat! Baymeadows Southpoint, on the other hand, requires a rental car. Taking a cab is an option, but they are few and far between.
The Southbank is the best location for accessibiliity, but even here exploring the countryside requires transport.
The bus system is available in every part of town but inadequate for sightseeing.
